FAQ

What's the difference between owner and user passwords?
User passwords (open passwords) prevent opening the file without the password — the API cannot bypass these. Owner passwords restrict operations (print, copy, edit) but the file opens without a password. The API removes owner-level restrictions.
Does unlocking alter the content or appearance of the PDF?
No. The unlock operation only removes the restriction metadata. All text, images, layout, and embedded fonts are preserved exactly. The resulting PDF is byte-for-byte identical except for the removed permission flags.
What should we tell stakeholders when a file can't be unlocked?
If a file is protected with a user (open) password, it cannot be unlocked without the password — this is the correct security behavior. Request the password from the original author or vendor, or request an unprotected version directly.
